Known as America’s largest, most visited weekend flea markets, Traders Village is a 21st Century hybrid of the old fashion swap meet with a contemporary flare for entertainment and family fun. It’s a nostalgic glimpse back to a time when small businesses were the norm and haggling with the shop owner brought surprising bargains. Traders Village Marketplace – San Antonio will have all of the exciting elements that have made Traders Village a Lone Star landmark synonymous with value and fun for almost 40-years. The original Traders Village opened in 1973, strategically placed between Dallas and Fort Worth on more than 80-acres of farmland in Grand Prairie, Texas, and is today at more than 175-acres and growing. From tires, tools and old tractors, to fresh produce, furniture, jewelry and junk, the market soon became a destination for shoppers looking for deals and an occasional treasure from thousands of mom and pop vendors.
With the addition of Traders Village’s own unique style of added value entertainment, such as the National Championship Native American Indian Pow Wow and the Prairie Dog Chili Cook-off, the startup open-air mart quickly earned its title, “The Famous Texas Flea Market”, and today sees more than 3.5 million visitors annually making it one of the top attractions in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
With the success of the Dallas / Fort Worth marketplace, a second Traders Village was opened in Houston in May 1989 with equal popularity. More than 1,500 vendors sell their goods and services from the northwest Houston location every weekend, while festival-goers and concert lovers take in wildly popular events from the Bayou City Cajun Festival, Village Art Car Show, and the Green Mountain Energy Summer Concert Series. Today the Houston market covers more than 100-acres and hosts more than 1.5 million guests each year.
At the intersection of SW Loop 410 and Old Pearsall Road, Phase One of Traders Village - San Antonio will cover more than 80-acres of the 290-acre plot, and will accommodate more than 1,000 vendors in enclosed, covered and open-lot sales spaces.
As in the other Traders Village markets, food stands throughout the property will offer All-American favorites such as burgers and corndogs, with an assortment of state fair-style foods like pizza and funnel cakes, mixed with an ethnic menu of tasty Thai, Latino treats and more.
Families will love the spacious center court with a giant shaded gazebo surrounded by carnival style rides for the kids -- a classic carousel, helicopter ride, train ride and the towering Star Dancer that takes riders to more than 80-feet above the market floor.
The entire facility will be paved and there will be clean, modern, air-conditioned restrooms, security, a professionally staffed first-aid facility, and a guest relations and information office on-site.
Coming in 2011 will be the Traders Village RV Resort with shade trees and well landscaped campsites, and a mini-mart, laundry, showers, recreation hall, playground, picnic tables, swimming pool, fishing hole.
Traders Village is committed to making the market a place that San Antonian’s will be proud of - a place that they will want to visit and recommend to their friends and out-of-town guests.
